Cemetery trust gets history lesson

By David Rak

Len Underwood was the star attraction at Avenel Cemetery Trust's 2019 annual meeting.

Having joined the trust in 1974 and since become a life member, Len gave a short history of how the trust was established: Originally it was made up of two delegates from each church: Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Church of England.

Many delegates have given service to the trust, and none more deserving of thanks than Joyce White who joined in 1986 and has retired as secretary after 33 continuous years’ service.

New office bearers were appointed at the meeting. Chairman will be Les Hemphill, secretary Margaret Greenaway and treasurer Yvonne Sloper.

While Mr Hemphill and Ms Sloper are long-time Avenel residents, Ms Greenaway is a relative newcomer having relocated to the area from Gippsland in 2015. She was the former secretary of Alberton Cemetery Trust, one of the oldest cemeteries in Victoria.
