The health service won the 2019 employer award for apprenticeship development as part of the Victorian Training Awards, receiving $5000 in prize money and a trophy.
Seymour Health was one of three nominated finalists in the category, presented at the state’s showcase for the best of the best in the TAFE and training sector.
The award was presented by Metro Trains Melbourne to Seymour Health’s quality and service development acting assistant director Vickie Callaghan.
The award recognises employers who have made innovative improvements in training which provide beneficial outcomes for their apprentices and/or trainees in their local community.
Seymour Health designed its 2018 school-based apprenticeship/traineeship program to instill confidence and self-belief in marginalised local youth.
Seymour Health has also strengthened its partnership with the Seymour Flexible Learning Centre through the innovative program.
The customised training provided at Seymour Health enables the students to learn how to confidently and appropriately interact with staff and health service consumers.
Seymour Health chief executive Chris McDonnell was proud of the achievement and said winning the award reflected the commitment of the health service to education and training.

“Winning this award particularly recognises the passion, commitment and dedication from our education department staff towards school-based students, helping them attain the skills needed for the career they want.”
Seymour Flexible Learning Centre principal Shane Elliott thanked Seymour Health for the partnership and support offered to the students of Seymour Flexible Learning Centre.
“The students not only gain employment skills and pathways, but are also offered guidance from an understanding and dedicated team,'' he said.
