There is a lot people don’t know about looking after their septic system, but Jeff from Septic Services in Seymour was kind enough to lend some maintenance advice.
How often does a septic need cleaning?
This depends on the size of your tank and the number of people living at your home. A family of three or four should expect to get their tank cleaned out every three or four years.
Can household cleaners be used?
Avoid using bleach and other harsh chemicals, especially in the laundry or bathroom. Most cleaning products are safe to use, but if you use a lot of straight bleach in your cleaning, you might actually kill the bacteria in your tank (which makes for a nasty smelling septic).
Is there anything you shouldn’t flush?
You should avoid flushing wipes and sanitary items down the toilet. These won’t break down and when they enter your septic tank they can cause it to clog up and stop functioning.
How should you maintain the lawn surrounding septic systems?
Keep your grass trimmed nice and low around your distribution lines. Septic tanks rely on evaporation to keep the area nice and dry. Long grass keeps too much moisture in the area and your lines can’t function correctly.
What should you look out for around livestock?
If you live on a bit of property, you also need to keep livestock away from the area. Distribution lines are only eight inches below the ground and in muddy conditions hooves can pierce and damage your lines.
