From October 15, if a cat is found at large outside its owner’s premises between sunset and sunrise, the owner is guilty of an offence under section 25 of the Domestic Animals Act 1994.
Community engagement was undertaken to gain feedback before the curfew was implemented.
Of the 383 people who responded to the Domestic Animal Management Plan survey, 70 per cent wanted a cat curfew, 48 per cent noted they had issues with cats roaming on private property and 74 per cent thought all cats should be desexed.
Community education about the curfew will include information sheets on the cat curfew outlining the new requirements, information on how to determine hours of sunset and sunrise and information about containing a cat during those hours.
On the first breach of the curfew, a written warning will be issued. An infringement will be issued for a second breach.
