Forge Through is an organisation supporting first responders and veterans. Founder and bladesmith Dean Hamilton created the program to provide a creative getaway for veterans and first responders that may be dealing with the mental and physical stressors often associated with their careers.
Forge Through has entered the Massive Murray Paddle, a week-long 404km race along the Murray River from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill in November.
The team will include three Seymour residents, Mr Hamilton and Forge Through participants.
A three-course meal will be held at The Brewers Table to raise funds for Forge Through. There will be lucky door prizes and an auction of unique items.
Mr Hamilton will also speak about the organisation and how it helps communities in need.
The Brewers Table owner Rob Fifield will take part in the paddle.
‘‘I completed the Massive Murray Paddle in November 2018 as part of a Victorian Scouting contingent in a kayak relay team,’’ he said.
‘‘I found it to be a hugely rewarding physical and mental challenge and knew within the first day I would be racing it again.
‘‘Part of participating in the paddle is to raise money for a charity, a not-for-profit, a group or association of your choosing and this is where Forge Through makes an appearance.’’
Mr Fifield said he learnt of Forge Through after discovering Mr Hamilton’s Skin ’n’ Bone Knives company.
‘‘Forge Through not only run 12 programs a year but are building a community and a family through its hard work,’’ he said.
‘‘It is allowing participants to know they are not alone and can work through any issues they may have, with support.
‘‘That’s why both Dean and I felt it very important our team of paddlers not only raised money and awareness for this great cause but had participants of the program be part of the paddle team and our supporting road crew.’’
Tickets for the event are $60, with $20 going to Forge Through. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite.
