Art at Kialla West didn’t just happen in the art room.
As a parent of three children who went through the school 2010-2020 with the talented Mrs Phillips inspiring them, visiting artist and as the Art teacher 2019-2023, I saw first-hand the wholistic approach this school took towards all aspects of learning, including art.
The dynamic art program spilled into the classrooms, yard and the greater community, continuing today under the guidance of the dynamic Mrs Kecskes.
The program itself explored 2D and 3D art and art appreciation.
How lucky we were to have a kiln supplied by the Parents and Friends Group; ceramics was always a favourite of the students.
Art often made its way into the classrooms, and in 2015 our integrated art/literature project concluded with a visit from author Graeme Base.
As an artist in residence, my highlight each year was working on the ‘Grade 6 Mosaic’, leaving a legacy of each graduating student for them to revisit in years to come.
Book Week art days, Anzac Day displays, KWPS Concert backdrops, external exhibitions such as The Matchbox Show; there was always an opportunity to celebrate art and the learning it brings to a school.
How lucky was I to be able to turn up to work dressed like a bee, robot or rock star, dance in class like Gerald the giraffe, or sing out loud to inspirational songs?
Just the same, the highlight of art at Kialla West was always the energy that the students gave to the program and creativity they achieved in what I always called ‘the best room in the school’.
