Monday saw the women’s pennant team travel to Kilmore to take on Trentham for round 2 of pennant. The team had another strong win of 4½ to ½ to continue their successful start to the season.
On Wednesday it was great to see Anne Smith (37), a relatively new member, have a win with 35 points. The extra competition of the best nine in was also won by Anne Smith with 17 points on a countback from Dilva Grattan. The ball pool went to Anne Smith, Di Byrne and Pat Ferris with 31 points.
In the men’s results, Gary Neville (19) had 35 points to win the day but only after a countback from Phil Jarvis with the same score. No one claimed any of the nearest-the-pins on Wednesday which is a highly unusual turn of events. A score of 34 points was needed to get into the ball pool.
Stubby Byrne (25) had 16 points to win the mixed nine holes with Duncan Chisholm the runner-up with 15 points.
There were a couple of district events on Thursday. The women competed at the Euroa Tournament with some success. Ricky Rickman won the A-grade scratch with 84 and Di Byrne had the best scratch score in B-grade with 88. The Dalhousie Veterans was on in Yea and John Boruch was again in the winners’ circle when he claimed A-grade with 37 points. Gary Neville was the runner-up in B-grade after he lost a count back with his 36 points.
We had some more wonderful rain overnight Thursday and Friday which has done wonders for the course. With that and the cooler air, the conditions on Saturday were a little tougher for the combined competition for the men and women. Some, however, did not seem to notice with some great scores amongst the winners. The best score of the day went to Stormy Tempest (17) who had a fantastic +6 to win B-grade. The A-grade winner was Peter Nelson (6) who had a very nice +4. Gary Neville (20) concluded his good week with a win in C-grade with +3. The nearest-the-pins went to Peter Nelson on both the sixth and 12th, Paula Britton on the 17th while the fourth stayed with the club. The drive and pitch on the eighth went to Rob Peterson and the 15th to Dave Pearce. A score of -1 or better was required to get into the ball pool.
There was no men’s pennant last weekend due to Mother’s Day however there is only one division left to play its final round next weekend. Our handicap team is hoping for a win so that it can join the other two Seymour teams in the finals to be held on May 26.
The Friday social six holes this week is stableford over holes 1-6. Saturday is a stableford round for the men while the women will be playing the Royal Women’s Hospital 4 ball better ball stableford event.

The May monthly medal was taken out by Graeme Galvin with a superb all round performance— Graeme’s driving, iron play and putting all came together to record 81-13-68 and win the medal by 2 strokes. Next best was a resurgent Wayne Le Cerf with a solid 88-18-70 — both Wayne and Graeme shape up as good prospects for next week’s Finnigan fourball event. Next best went to a couple sly veterans also letting the field know they will be thereabouts come next week’s big event; Gary Bow knocked out a 87-15-72 and Phil Neville 85-13-72.
The-nearest-the-pins went to Phil Neville on the hard to reach third, Tim Baldwin with a silky strike to the 13th and Gary Bow flying one up to the 16th. Next week’s golf is the Finnigan fourball which is played over two weeks, the Finnigan is one of the longest continually-run events of the men’s calendar and an event everyone wants to win; assembly is 8.30am in readiness for a 9.30am hit off. On office duty is D.Love and in the bar W.Le Cerf.

Last Saturday was a stroke round and once again a good field of men took to the fairways. President Dale Smith had a terrific round of 82 off the stick which gave him a nett score of 69 and that was good enough to claim the winner’s voucher. Ollie Aitken also had a great score of 87 and was one shot back on nett 70. Ball winners were Dale, Ollie and Matt Eddy with 73 nett. NTPs were won by David Grecian and David Fullager but the birdie ball remained with the club.
Unfortunately there weren’t enough ladies for a comp, so they joined in with the men; the Silver Spoon round will be rescheduled.
The ladies’ pennant team recorded their first win for the season, defeating Lancefield 3½ to 1½. Well done to Lauris, Marlene and Lyn on their wins and Anne for her fighting square. Well done also to Joyce White for filling the number 5 spot as she hasn’t played much golf at all over the last year and a half. This week the ladies travelled to Romsey to play Romsey who are currently holding top position on the ladder. Results next week.
