The Seymour Volunteer Group started in the mall with an urn on a table, selling coffee and tea to the locals for a donation.
That was long before cafe culture arrived in Seymour.
The group progressed to selling plates of morning tea to local businesses and in 2018 more than 500 plates were provided by the volunteers.
Seymour’s Royal Hotel supported the local effort by donating the cream for scones that formed part of the plates.
The work of gathering orders, preparing and delivering food became too onerous for the small group of volunteers this year.
Local groups in the community have stepped up to support the work of the Seymour Volunteer Group by hosting their own morning teas and donating the proceeds to the Cancer Council.
Seymour Bowling Club and Seymour Line Dancers held events which raised more than $1500.
Any local business or group can host their own ‘Cuppa for Cancer’ and the money will go toward Seymour’s total for the Biggest Morning Tea, if processed through the Seymour Volunteer Group.
Seymour Volunteers Group leader Robyn Chivers said the group would like people to support the Royal Hotel’s Biggest Morning Tea on June 23.
‘‘Come along and raise funds that will make a big difference to those impacted by cancer,’’ she said.
‘‘Every dollar raised helps fund life-saving research, prevention and support programs, and information.’’
It’s on from 10.30am at the Royal Hotel and the cost is $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the bar.
For more information, phone the Royal Hotel on 57921004.
The Seymour Volunteer Group welcomes more members to continue its work.
Group members meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm at the Cancer Services Unit at Seymour Health.
