Seymour VRI’s midweek pennant season is now at the pointy end with a good win against Eildon at the Seymour VRI green.
Although all rinks were close in the result, Seymour VRI won two of the three rinks with an overall margin of six shots.
The Seymour VRI team finished in second position on the ladder allowing a second chance this week playing against an undefeated Wallan at Yea Bowling Club.
Seymour VRI 14-72 def. Eildon 2-66.
Bill Dawe’s rink in a close encounter up to the 15th end then increased the lead to be eight shots up with one end to play and finished with a six-shot win.
Joe Purcell’s rink lost five consecutive ends to be nine shots down at the 11th end, then chasing score after lunch finally evened the score at the 19th end and with one shot down at the 23rd end scored on the last two ends to win by four shots.
Daniel Noonan’s rink was an interesting game and were looking good with six shots up at the eighth end, but did not score the next five ends to be three shots down at the lunch break.
The opposition took the last end to go down by four shots.
In the Saturday pennant finals fever has hit for divisions one and two in the Central Bowls Division.
Division one started favourites against Wallan at the Yea Bowls green and although one rink won by 18 shots, another rink lost by 18, leaving the third rink vulnerable but they managed to win their rink giving a nine-shot win overall.
Division two played at Broadford against rival team Kilmore and came home winning all three rinks by a comfortable margin of 32 shots up overall.
Both teams now go into their respective grand final in two weeks’ time.
Division seven Goulburn Valley travelled more than 100km each way to Kyabram and after the two rinks did battle on the green, both walked away with a drawn game.
Division one travelled to Yea for a semi-final that resulted in a win for the team — Seymour VRI 77 defeated Wallan 68.
Luke Spargo’s rink was 11 shots up at the 13th end, the opposition scored five shots the next end to make the score look more respectable, but were still eight shots up at the 20th end then won the last five ends to win by 18 shots.
Daniel Noonan’s rink scored on the first four ends to set up a leading score base and continued their attack to be 10 shots up at the 20th end then fought it out for a finish to win by nine shots.
Geoff Neal’s rink struggled against a superior opposition being 16 shots down at the 13th end, were more competitive scoring nine shots to 11 after afternoon tea finished, with an 18-shot deficit and being the first rink to finish had a nervous wait to make sure the other two rinks were able to cover their deficit.
Division two travelled to Broadford for a semi-final game against Kilmore resulting in winning all three rinks by 32 shots overall, but the Kilmore team have another chance next week and will be really keen to have another crack at Seymour VRI in two weeks’ time.
Seymour VRI 79 defeated Kilmore 47.
Ian Cashill’s rink took control of the game after the 19th end being one shot down at the 18th end then winning six of the last seven ends to be 11 shots up at the finish of the game.
Peter Stevens’ rink were seven shots up at the 13th end and were only one shot up at the 16th end, then found some form to win the game by 11 shots.
Moreno Puppa’s rink had a good game early in the game to set up a buffer score of nine shots at the 17th end and continuing the trend to be 10 shots up at the end of the game.
The Goulburn Valley division seven team travelled to Kyabram with the intentions of winning the game and possibly regaining the second position on the ladder should other results be favourable, but that did not happen as a drawn game is not a win and even though round nine that was heated out will be replayed next week the team will have to do with third placing on the ladder.
Seymour VRI 7-46 drew with Kyabram 7-46.
Stephen McGregor’s team as the only winning rink playing catch up on their opposition finally caught up with their opposition at the 14th end and retained the lead for the remainder of the game winning by nine shots and being the last rink to finish held on for a team draw.
Wayne Flint’s rink played a competitive game being only two shots down at the 17th end, and then won only two more ends out of the last eight ends to go down by nine shots.
On Saturday both Central Bowls Division teams will have a well-earned break, preparing and practising for that all important grand final.
The division seven Goulburn Valley team still placed third on the ladder will replay their round nine fixture against Avenel at the Avenel green.

Raffle prizes on Thursday went to Ken Butcher, Lyn Solomon and Linda Brown.
The members draw was number 164, held by Eon Densworth who was in attendance at the draw and went home with $100 in his pocket.
In the midweek pennant division one Goulburn Valley round 14 played at Seymour against Shepparton Golf and was rained out, so collected eight points.
Division three played at Shepparton Park under the roof to come home with 10-shot win, 14-68 to 2-58. Division five went to Kyabram losing their game by 11 shots 0-40 to 14-51.
In the Central Bowls District division one, Seymour played Yea and having been washed out, halved the points for the day.
In the weekend pennant Goulburn Valley round 14, division one played at home against Shepparton Park.
Seymour was unlucky to lose the game, winning a rink and drawing another and went down by two shots.
Division five played Shepparton RSL winning their ninth game in as many weeks, RSL 4-70, Seymour 12-76.
Division seven played at home against Dookie and had another good win 14-67 to 0-30.
In the Central Bowls Division first semi-final division two Seymour played at Broadford against Wallan to lose their game by a mere 10 shots.
