Corowa-Rutherglen Roos travelled to Myrtleford last Saturday with a quiet confidence that if they bought their best game, they could take the game up to the Myrtleford Saints.

Unfortunately, the result was not in the Roos favour with a big 50-point win to the Saints who came back hard after their shock loss to Lavington the previous week.
The result sees the Roos drop to sixth place on the ladder with a bye coming up this Saturday. The week off provides an opportunity for players to rest and recover at the half-way mark of the season.
Saturday’s game began on a soft track, but both teams were up for the challenge with early pressure and quick ball movement by both teams.
Cody Howard’s intercept marking blunted some of the home team’s forward moves.
Jy Lane and Darcy Melksham were winning possessions in the midfield as goals were traded during the early part of the quarter, but two goals to the Saints late in the quarter saw them lead 4.2.26 to the Roos 2.0.12 at the first break.
The Saints stepped up their pressure game in the second quarter with consistent clearances from the stoppages and their ability to use the ball effectively going forward.
The Roos were battling against the tide as the Saints added a string of goals through the agency of their string marking forwards.
Hayden Filliponi was busy with his movement in the forward line. He had three goals to this stage of the game.
Kaelan Bradtke got on the end of some forward moves later in the quarter, scoring a goal.
Darcy Melksham was busy gaining possessions through the middle of the ground. But it was the Saints who extended their lead to go in at half-time 10.8.68 to the Roos 4.2.26.
Half time was an opportunity for the Roos to assess where they were at and what they needed to do get back in the game.
As a result, they came out and lifted their intensity. Tom Goodwin was becoming influential at the stoppages with his strong work, giving the mid-fielders chances to open up the game.
Cameron Wilson’s possessions were putting the Roos into attack, Jy Lane was winning the ball in the centre and Jack Schilg was turning defence into attack.
For much of the quarter it was the Roos who had taken back control of the contest. Five Roo goals without an answer by the Saints was looking like the tide was turning.
Cameron Barrett showed that he was adapting to the tempo of Ovens and Murray football.
However, later in the quarter it was the Saints who were able to get the ball in long to their tall forwards who kicked three goals in succession to wrest back control.
At three-quarter time the Saints led 16.9.105 to the Roos 9.2.56.
As the final quarter began, it was noticeable that the heavy ground was taking its toll on player’s legs.
There were periods where the early intensity was lacking from both sides. The Roos found moving the ball into the forward 50 was being rebounded by an effective Saints backline. At the other end of the ground the height and strength of the Saints were out working their opponents.
Final scores: Myrtleford Saints 19.14.128 to Corowa-Rutherglen Roos 9.4.58.
Goalkickers: Hayden Filliponi 5, Kaelan Bradtke 3, Jy Lane 1.
Award Winners: Corowa Gold Club – Jack Schilg, Aussie Hotel – Callum Spencer, Newmarket Hotel – Joe Hansen, Corowa Whisky and Chocolate Factory – Jy Lane, Origin Clothing – Kaelan Bradtke.
Reserves
The Roos went into last Saturday’s game against the Saints with a shortage of players through unavailability and injury.
Consequently, the Roos had to call on a number of thirds players to make up the numbers on the day. As a result, the Saints were way too strong for the visitors and ran out comfortable winners on the day.
One highlight of the game was Jed Ansell’s first goal at the Roos. The players got around Jed after his shot sailed through the goals.
Reserves award winners: Corowa Whisky and Chocolate Factory – Matt Bush, Aussie Hotel – Taj Smith, Sodens Hotel – Ned Taylor, Club Award – Jesse Johnstone and Finn Osborne, Ricky Ds – Patrick Lavis.
Under 18s
The Roos made their way up to Myrtleford on Saturday to take on the Saints on a waterlogged and slippery surface.
It was anticipated that it would be a tight, low scoring battle, and that's exactly what it was, with both sides only scoring three goals each up until half time.
The Roos were one point leaders heading into the main break.
The third quarter was a little better for the Roos, with Ryan Beveridge putting on two more goals and in some great defensive pressure by the backline, the Saints were kept to only three points.
The last quarter was set up to be a thriller and both sides came out determined to get a win on the board.
Justin Lewis and Nash Lavis were restricting the Saints entries into the forward line, but the Roos were also finding it difficult to convert when they got it forward.
In the end, the Saints started to push forward and were kicking a lot of behinds, which was slowly narrowing the gap.
And with three minutes to go in the game, kicked a goal and put them one point up and that was the final margin when the final siren went in a hotly contested game.
