The senior team started the game slowly with Finley kicking the first goal of the game in a match where Mulwala needed a confidence boost coming into finals.
It wasn’t long before the forward line moved into gear with a couple of quick goals from strong marks to Jack Sutherland.
Sean Robinson and Thomas Wilson were contributing well when the ball hit the ground and were making the Finley backmen nervous coming out of defense.
Bodhi Butts and Jackson Gash began to assert their dominance at the contest through the middle of the ground in the second quarter as the game opened up for Mulwala who were making the most of their opportunities moving forward.
Jake Dalgleish was moving well and the ball movement coming out of defense through the hands of James Wilson and Dylan McNamara was making life easy for the forwards as Jack continued to pile on the goals finishing with 8 for the day.
As he has done all year Lachlan Rouell was brilliant deep in defense and Owen Conway was great in the ruck and floating forward to kick a few goals also.
A great team effort on the day with a positive win moving into the final home and away game for the year against Congupna in a game Mul must win to finish top two on the ladder.
Reserves
Mulwala 17.15.117 defeated Finley 4.4.28.
Facing a strengthened Finley line up still fighting for a spot in the top 6, Mulwala started the game brilliantly with a strong 7 goal first quarter led by the on-ball dominance of Joe Bland, Wally Thomson and Matt McLachlan.
Cam Magher was marking everything around the ground and floating forward to kick goals and creating space for Austin Frauenfelder and Andrew Maskell-Dunstan to work into.
Angus Heslin was moving around the middle of the ground well giving Andy Miller a break from the ruck duties and Sam Davies and Flynn Fletcher were controlling the wings linking the defense with the forward line well.
Charley McKenna and Kyle Abikhair had their opponents covered for speed and didn’t slow down towards the end of the game as Mulwala ran away with a strong win.
Goals: C. Magher 4, A. Frauenfelder 3, J. Bland 2, W. Thomson 2, A. Heslin 2, F. Fletcher 2, A. Maskell-Dunstan 1, M. McLachlan 1.
Best: A. Maskell-Dunstan, A. Heslin, M. McLachlan, S. Davies, K. Abikhair, C. McKenna.
Thirds
Mulwala 6.2.38 defeated by Finley 8.12.60.
Another tough assignment for the Thirds coming up against another top four team however unlike last week the boys came to play in the first quarter matching their fancied opponents around the ground and in front of goals with the scores level at quarter time.
Jett Peters was outstanding around the ground and very dangerous in front of goals and along with Jaxen Wheeler their straight kicking for goal was keeping Mul in touch.
The pressure applied from the backline led by Jye Brennan and Brock Johnson to the Finley forwards and the constant hard ball efforts from Xavier Watson were fantastic in allowing the midfield of Ethan Lay, Josh Eder and Dillon Kirchen to run and carry the ball through the centre of the ground into the forward line where Mulwala were just unable to fully capitalize on all their hard work going down in a close contest.
The boys have been fantastic all year and their dedication and desire to follow the coach’s instructions has ensured that they have not had their colors lowered once and should get the win they deserve next week.
Goals: J. Peters 4, J. Wheeler 2.
Best: J. Peters, E. Lay, D. Kirchen, J. Eder, B. Reid, X. Watson.
Fourths
Mulwala 14.16.100 defeated Finley 0.1.1.
The Fourths, having their final game before finals, showed their usual dominance early and didn’t give their Finley opponents much of a sniff throughout the entire game.
Jai Sneddon was great up forward finishing with 8 goals. Oliver Watson, Van Kreeck and Nash McNamara controlled the middle of the ground all day and both Olly and Van snuck forward on occasions for goals.
Maiko Leith and Zach Wheeler controlled the centre half back line all day and if anything got past them it was quickly repelled by Jace Gove, Sam Tayler or Kade Sullivan.
Rhys Burgess was again good up forward and the whole team had a great warm up for their final’s series in a few weeks’ time.
Coach Kreeck has had a great group of kids to work with this year and they have all been fantastic in their approach to games and their willingness to listen and work hard under the coach’s instruction.
Junior Presentation Day is this Sunday, August 21 at loyal sponsor the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort and it will be great to see all the parents there supporting the kids.
Goals: J. Sneddon 8, V. Kreeck 2, T. Sanderson 2, M. Leith 1, O. Watson 1.
