Avenel
Saturday was a perfect day for golf and plenty of juniors turned out for round three of the junior club championships. The day’s results were critical in the outcome of the championship and young Campbell Smith saluted again to take the scratch event with one-over, five shots in front of big brother Lindsay. A big improver in Max Harding was third.Owen Smith won the handicap with 22 nett on a countback from Max Harding. Frankie Eagles was not far behind and Lachie O'Brien played well for fourth.Eleven players qualified for the club championships and there were some fantastic trophies donated by Total Sports Seymour up for grabs. It came as no surprise when Campbell Smith held the scratch trophy aloft with three-over from his best two rounds, with brother Lindsay coming in second with five-over from his best two. Prizes were sponsored by JCS Electrical Solutions. Our handicap champion for 2020 was Max Harding with a fantastic six-under over his best two rounds (reaching his goal of achieving a single-figure handicap along the journey). Owen Smith came in second with two-under from his two rounds. Prizes for the handicap were sponsored by Aequum Accountants.Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to Alex and Jared Smith and Tim Batten for running the clinics, as well as to all the parents that have helped out. Thanks also to the Sponsors – JCS Electrical Solutions, Aequum Accountants and Total Sports Seymour. The club will keep running the Saturday morning competition as long as it’s not too hot.
There was no men’s competition on Saturday however the club had several pairs travel across the paddock to Nagambie to play in the Goulburn Cup. No trophies were brought home, but thanks to Alex, Lindsay, Jared, Brent, Dale, David F. and Anne for flying the flag for Avenel.
Nagambie
A late edition of the Nagambie Golf Club Goulburn Cup, sponsored by The Royal Mail Hotel, did little to dampen the enthusiasm for the event, with a large contingent of golfers turning out to vie for a space on the club's most prestigious honour boards.
Seventy-two players hit off in what turned out to be hot and sultry conditions that became taxing as the day wore on.
But fitness was not a problem for the club's two winning women Irene Keogh and Jo Goodacre. With Keogh always at her very best for the big events, and Sunday no exception, she was well supported by playing partner Goodacre to win with a total of 42 points.
Unlucky runners-up, also with 42 points, were visitors Irene Davies and Maree Rickman, who narrowly missed out on a countback.
Nearest-the-pins for the women went to Maureen King with a stellar strike on the third, Jo Goodacre belting it up to the eighth, Rickman putting it close on the 13th and Annette Mills caressing one on to the 16th.
The 2020 Goulburn Cup went to father-son combination Eddie and John James. Eddie is a regular at the event, travelling down from Wodonga each year to contest it. And this year his travels have finally paid off, winning with son John with a great total of 10.
Looking at the card, Eddie did the bulk of the damage, with John chiming in on cue to win by one.
Runners-up were John Richards and John Humphries with a credible nine. One of the club's most senior players in the field, Richards has had many a high-finishing position in the big events in recent years only to fall agonisingly short again.
The nearest-the-pins were won by Jeff Mills on the third, although he was not sure how, Greg Whiteman on the eighth, Barry Cyer used only luck to get to the 13th and Wayne LeCerf attacked the 16th.
The Nagambie Golf Club would like to thank its sponsor the ‘Top Pub’ for its ongoing support, and the club's many volunteers with course preparation, catering and event organising.
A big shout out to the visiting players from Avenel, Seymour, Kilmore, Box Hill, Myrtleford, Nathalia, Rushworth and Wodonga for supporting the day.
Next week's golf will see the continuation of Friday twilight golf for a 5 pm to 6 pm hit-off. The bar will be open afterwards. Then on Sunday the club will return to an 8 am to 8.30 am hit off for a par event with D. Brown on office duty and W. LeCerf in the bar.
