League officials confirmed the decision to run its under-10, 12, 14, 16 and youth girls’ competitions at a meeting last week.
President Mark Lambourn said while the nine-week school term from July to September was the basis for an extraordinary season, the league would announce rosters in two lots.
“We’ve been monitoring closely what we can and cannot do and, while we believe we have a green light, we’re going to release an initial draw for four weeks and following that a five-week roster,’’ he said.
Lambourn admitted the league was ready to start competition immediately, but with a sufficient lead-in time required for clubs to get ready, feedback from a survey and the pending school holidays, it was decided that July 18 would mark football’s long-awaited return.
“It's all about junior development and there's kids itching to get back to running around, burning off some energy and getting all the benefits that sport provides,” he said.
Seymour will be right in the hunt in the MCBM Youth Girls competition, with the club recruiting two new players for the coming season.
A chance call from an interested player in 2019 led to Emily Williams joining the Lions this year.
After hearing about the competitive Lions outfit, Williams came along to Kings Park to witness the action and, since joining the team, has been an active member for the club.
A prodigious, if raw, kick and an athletic mobile tall, Williams will be a surprise for opposing teams and a great partner in crime to the team’s resident tall, Lucy Dawe.
To complement Williams, the Lions have also welcomed Olivia McGee, who looks to be the youngest and fastest player in the squad.
After playing alongside the boys at Broadford in recent years, McGee has made the switch to give under-18 girls football a crack.
● Any girls interested in joining the new Lions are welcome to team up with Olivia and Emily at Kings Park on any Sunday in July and August. For more information, phone 0418 552 016.
