Seymour Blasters’ junior basketball program fielded four teams in the 44th Shepparton ‘Show Me’ Junior Tournament at the weekend, with the under-14 boys team just missing out on a grand final berth.
The under-14s competed in the C-grade competition, where they won all four of their regular matches to rank second in their pool below Euroa.
First up they faced the Tumut Timberwolves, where they triumphed 38-25, before rolling CVBA STARS by 18 points.
Their final two wins came a lot easier, with the Blasters dominating in their matches against Mansfield Eagles and Benalla Breakers.
Seymour’s Jesse Brock was on fire throughout the tournament, averaging 20 points a game in the pooled matches.
After progressing to the semi-final, the Blasters failed to get on top of rival Euroa, losing the qualifier 23-32.
Seymour’s under-16 boys team, who contested the B-grade title, finished its tournament with a 1-3 record.
Its breakthrough win came in the second match, when it beat Mildura Heat, 39-36.
Skaife Brock starred throughout the competition, averaging 12 points a game.
The under-14 girls contingent took on the best of the best in A-grade, coming away with an even 2-2 record.
The Blasters got off to a flying start, beating Mildura Heat 32-19, before triumphing in a thrilling one-point victory over Shepparton Gators.
Summer Robertson (15 points) and Sienna Sapiano (10 points) starred.
Rounding out their weekend, the under-14s failed to overcome the Sale Sonics and Wangaratta Warriors, losing by 13 and 10 points respectively.
The under-12 boys C-grade side finished third in their pool with a 2-2 record.
With the bye first up, the Blasters struggled in their next two games, going down to CVBA STARS and Mildura Heat.
Rallying in the final two matches, the Blasters recorded wins over Deniliquin Giants, 41-4, and Euroa, 30-22.
Hamish Melville showed plenty of skill over the weekend, shooting 41 points in the first three matches.
