Broadford took to the crease first and lost two quick wickets in its opening pair Mitch Collier (6) and Blair Hobba (2).
But it was Braden Hickey and Liam Collier who took back control of the innings, combining for a partnership of 60. Hickey in particular boasted a strong strike rate to bring up 50 for just 40 balls.
Jake Martin (25) and Shaun O’Neill (33) also combined for a strong late-order partnership, while bowler Jack Connell was handy with the bat to edge Broadford to 176 by the end of the innings.
For a second week, Lachlan Drummond was Seymour’s best bowler, taking 2-25, while Dallas Anderson and coach Brock Boddington also claimed two wickets apiece.
But chasing a total north of 170 proved too difficult for a young Seymour side, with a mid-order collapse effectively meaning the Maroons (111) fell 65 runs short of the target.
Connell tested Seymour’s batsmen, taking 3-17 for Broadford, while Dummond, batting higher up the order this week, top-scored with 31 runs. Brodey Pointon (18) and James Voogt (16) also added to the scoreboard.
● The efforts of two Yea bowlers saw the Tigers successfully start their season 2-0, easily chasing Eastern Hill's total with seven wickets in hand on Saturday.
Yea's Corey Malcolm was his side’s best with the ball, recording 3-3 from five overs, while Dan Evans was almost as economical, finishing with 2-6.
Eastern Hill won the toss and elected to bat first, but Yea’s fielding and bowling efforts were too strong for the Eagles, who were all out for 65 with 10 overs remaining.
Eastern Hill’s Brayden Speechley top-scored with 18, while Seamus Feery proved handy in the middle order with 17, including two boundaries.
But their efforts proved futile, with Yea running down Eastern Hill’s total in just under 24 overs, losing only three wickets.
Captain Mick Steiner’s trouble with the bat continued, out for his second duck in as many weeks, but Damon Malcolm (23 not out) and Ryan Akers (24 not out) steered the ship to get the Tigers over the line.
● Round three of the A-grade competition kicks off this Saturday from 12.30pm, with Tallarook to take on Seymour at Chittick Oval, Kilmore to host the Yea Tigers and Eastern Hill, in its first home game of the season, fighting it out against Broadford at Kings Park Reserve.
