Through community fundraisers and donations from caring locals, Yarrawonga Friends in Common (YFIC) assist not just those who are undergoing treatment but also those caring for them.
In an overview of the Yarrawonga Friends in Common members and what the group does for the community, the Yarrawonga Chronicle would like to introduce Support Coordinator Ro Cilia who is the first port of call for assistance from the generous group.
“Way back in 2017 I was walking by the lake where a lifestyle expo was taking place and I stopped to talk to two ladies who were handing out information about Yarrawonga Friends in Common,” Ro said.
“’Who are you and what do you do?’ I asked and was given some brochures that I read and became interested in the work of this organisation.
“From that I attended the next two meetings and then joined Friends in Common as a member.
“Shortly after I was elected Treasurer which is a position I held for five years.”
Each year at the AGM, members put up their hand to take on certain roles within the organisation, some they have held for a number of years and others that are of interest to that individual.
All roles are always filled and there is always someone around to assist when needed.
“Now I am support coordinator. In my working life I was a urology nurse and with my nursing background I feel better suited for this role,” Ro said.
“So what do I do now? I meet people who have been diagnosed with cancer and who have reached out to us for assistance and support.
“I have a chat and explain what YFIC can do to make their life a little easier.
“At that meeting we make a plan to suit their circumstances then following this, the person is introduced to another YFIC member who will become their Support Person throughout their treatment.
“Each person will only meet two YFIC members – the support coordinator and their support person.”
Anybody who is need of assistance should not be nervous about meeting with YFIC as the dedicated group are made up of lovely and caring locals who have those suffering with cancer’s best interests at heart and your privacy stays just that, private.
“People’s privacy is of utmost importance to YFIC. Private information is securely kept and collated by the Support Coordinator,” Ro said.
“Yarrawonga Friends in Common is here to support ANYBODY in our community who needs assistance and support whilst going through their treatment. That means EVERYBODY.
“If you would like our assistance or just someone to talk to, please ring me on the Yarrawonga Friends in Common phone on 0497 689 027.”
