A future directions report will be considered by councillors outlining several issues including the proposed levee’s cost, safety value, economic impact and community feedback.
Discussion about a levee in Seymour has been ongoing for several years and, in 2010, council resolved to complete a planning scheme amendment to obtain the required land for the levee.
To support this process, council continued to undertake further investigations to determine the best alignment for the levee and to examine the areas of land that may need to be acquired to build the levee and its associated works.
This planning work found the levee would cost about $20 million.
Because of the cost, council sought community feedback last year to guide it in its decision-making.
The directions report has combined previous reports, economic impacts, safety aspects, Seymour revitalisation and community engagement to assist councillors with their decision.
Mitchell Shire Mayor David Lowe said council understood the proposed levee project was very emotive and there were several views in the community.
“We now have the task of weighing up a number of reports, feedback from consultations through the years and from our most recent round of community consultation,” he said.
“The future directions report before council will give all of us a sense of the merits of the proposed levee and its impacts on Seymour.”
