The CFA has more than 55 000 operational, non-operational and junior volunteers who help protect 3.3 million Victorians and more than one million homes and properties across the state.
Whiteheads Creek-Tarcombe Fire Brigade's Captain Scott James said local brigades were made up of a wide variety of people all working towards a common goal.
“There is so much more to the CFA than putting out fires,” he said.
“A big part of the CFA’s job is education and awareness to help keep the community safe.
“The local brigades also serve as a great way for people to get to know their neighbours and make new friends.
“There’s a heap of different roles available and we’re always needing different skill sets to improve how we can help the community.”
Mr James said it was encouraging to see the children of current members become involved with the brigade.
“The CFA is a very important part of the community and younger members coming through means it will continue into the future,” he said.
“Whatever your skill set or background, I encourage you to look into volunteering and see what you can do and how rewarding it can be.”
CFA chief officer and chief executive Steve Warrington said this year had been like no other and the contributions from our volunteer had been remarkable.
“I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to each and every one of our volunteers,” he said.
“The 2019-20 fire season will go down in history as one of the most extensive bushfire seasons we have faced.
“Our people, whether fighting fires here or on deployment interstate, made a significant and critical difference in some of the most challenging conditions we have experienced for many years.
“During the fire season there were no boundaries between anyone at CFA. Every brigade, district, region and department in CFA contributed, everybody backed each other.
“Thank you to all our people and their families for their incredible contribution during our challenging fire season and indeed every day.
“I am extremely proud to lead our great organisation. And I hope you are proud to be a part of it.”
