Leonie is originally from the Gold Coast, where she spent time volunteering and running workshops for the Salvation Army on personal development.
Leonie has a passion for aromatherapy, which uses aromatic essential oils for better health, relaxation and wellbeing, and offered free pamper sessions for residents.
Each session involved a complimentary hand massage and nail care, with gentle relaxing music in a tranquil space created by Leonie.
She used a salt lamp to help create a calming atmosphere by clearing away negative ions and negative energy.
Barrabill residents were invited to sit back, relax and enjoy being pampered using a range of Leonie’s aromatherapy oils, which create unique and beautiful fragrances. There is a fragrance for men and one for the women.
The sessions also provided an opportunity for residents to chat with Leonie, who is very interested in getting to know each person individually and learning more about them.
It has been a hit with residents, who are eagerly anticipating Leonie’s return when pandemic restrictions are lifted.
Leonie said aromatherapy was not something people expected to see in an aged care facility, however if used appropriately, it had been proven to have several positive effects.
“It is not uncommon for older people to experience symptoms such as loss of appetite, anxiety or trouble sleeping at night,” she said.
“And for those caring for them, it is natural to want to try everything possible to ease their symptoms.
“Aromatherapy can assist to soothe people’s moods, reduce anxiety and agitation. It can also help with symptoms related to poor circulation, dry and cracked skin, respiratory infections, arthritis, and it can play a role in improving concentration and memory.
“The scents of aromatherapy often evoke memories, which can encourage an older person’s conversation. The sense of smell is closely linked with memory, potentially more so than any of the other senses.”
In addition to the Pamper Sessions, Leonie also offers sensory sessions, where she discusses fragrances and their healing properties with some questions and answers for residents to fill out.
