Born on November 25, 1919 in New Zealand, Dorothy made the move across the Tasman to be closer to her son, Lyndon in Broadford when she was 80.
A farmer’s wife for most of her life, Lyndon described his mother as a deeply religious woman who was never afraid to voice her opinion.
“She kept a close eye on all of us growing up. She was stern but fair and kept us on the straight and narrow,” Lyndon said.
“Mum never backed down from an argument. No matter how much we tried her patience as kids, she always stuck to her guns and did what was right.”
Dorothy moved to Barrabill House two years ago and has made an impact on staff and other residents.
“I was caring for her before she moved to Barrabill House until her dementia became more than I could manage,” Lyndon said.
“I couldn’t be happier with how she has settled in at Barrabill House and how well the staff treat her.
“They made a big deal of her birthday and it was very much appreciated.”
Barrabill House acting nurse unit manager Vicki Smith said everyone at the nursing home knew Dorothy as she was always on the move.
“Dorothy makes her way around the facilities all day despite her age. She is in very good shape,” Vicki said.
“She settled in and got know everyone who now loves greeting her and sees plenty of her.”
