Dave and mate Tristan McDougal will embark on the 3800km journey — via the Gulf of Carpentaria — in May as part of the Shitbox Rally.
And they couldn’t have picked a better car to do it in.
It’s a 1994 Toyota Camry Wagon Dave bought from his mum, with 530,000km already on the speedo.
‘‘It goes but it has a few problems we need to get sorted before we go,” Dave said.
“Breakdowns are all part of the journey and I’m sure we will have our fair share.”
It’s all in the name of charity, with more than $17 million in funds raised during the past 10 years going to the Cancer Council.
‘‘I’ve had family and friends affected by cancer so this is a great way to raise money for cancer research and do my bit,’’ Dave said.
‘‘We need to raise a minimum of $5000.’’
Dave and Tristan will join 550 other participants and cars worth less than $1000 on the seven-day journey from May 23 to 29.
With $1420 in the bank so far, Dave hopes the community will get behind him to reach the target.
‘‘We’re also looking for local businesses to sponsor us,’’ he said.
Anyone wishing to sponsor Dave and Tristan can call Dave on 0438 942 549.
