Held at Government House, the function was attended by Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau and her husband, Anthony Howard QC.
The governor spoke about the important role Men’s Sheds play in maintaining the health and wellbeing of their members.
“The governor also spoke about the help Men’s Sheds provide to the local community,” Seymour Men's Shed president Michael Coffey said.
“We also heard from Victorian Men’s Shed Association president Lindsay Oates. He spoke about the shed’s role helping men with health issues, providing support and providing a service for the community.”
The Seymour Men’s Shed continues to play an important role in the community after beginning in Puckapunyal almost 12 years ago.
“It wasn’t an ideal setup out there, but we were happy to have a base. We’ve gone from strength to strength since moving into the shed on Worrough Rd, Seymour,” Michael said.
“It’s hard to understate the importance of the shed for our members. We are mainly older blokes and it serves as an important outlet.
“Some men come to work, and others just come for a cuppa and a chat. Without the shed a lot of local men would be stuck at home and that’s never good for your mental health.”
Michael said Seymour Men’s Shed members enjoyed having a place to keep busy and make friends but also loved making an impact in the community.
“We’ve made things for numerous community groups and we regularly do repairs for individuals,” he said.
“It gives everyone a great feeling when we see our handiwork out in the community or hear how thankful someone is for what we have done.
“The community have been very generous donating items to allow us to expand what we do.
“We’re open two mornings a week now, but we could do more if we had more members.
“Our doors are always open to men of any background and any skill set. You can come to work on something, or you can just come in for a chat.”
The Seymour Men’s Shed is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9am to 12.30pm.
Anyone interested in joining can drop into the shed on Worrough Rd or phone Michael on 0458 911 191 or Paul on 0417 131 146.
