The state-of-the-art facility delivered by Hines Constructions, is Federation Council’s largest single project since council was formed in 2016 following the merger of Corowa and Urana Shires.
The site has already been well supported by the community who have enjoyed fitness, fun and relaxation with the 25-metre heated indoor pool available to the public over the winter months.
Mulwala resident Liz Seeliger described the centre as a “world class facility”.
“Personally, I think it is absolutely brilliant!” Ms Seeliger told The Free Press.
“It’s an incredible asset for the entire Federation community. The first time I went there, I was blown away by the experience. It was so much better than what I expected.”
Ms Seeliger was particularly impressed by the inclusivity of the site that boasts ramps, aquatic wheelchairs, accessible toilets and change rooms with a change table and electric hoist. The amenities have set a new benchmark in accessibility and energy efficiency for regional public pools in southern NSW and northeast Victoria.
“The amenities the have available for people with disabilities is tremendous,” she said.
“There are so many more small details that just make it fantastic for anyone in the community to use.”
Ms Seeliger who is part of Federation Council’s Ageing Well Advisory Committee hopes to organise a routine bus service from Mulwala to Corowa for other enthusiastic residents to use the pool.
Federation Council has also recorded strong enrolment numbers in aqua aerobics, group fitness classes and the Learn to Swim program.
Staff at the Aquatic Centre have been blown away by the response for the Learn to Swim program with young swimmers from across the Federation region jumping at the opportunity to grow their skills and confidence in the water.
So far, there has seen more than 200 enrolment enquiries resulting in 247 children set to participate in the program.
The classes, which commence in August, will be offered every week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the school terms.
Federation Council Mayor, Cr Pat Bourke said he was delighted in the response of the Learn to Swim program.
“The team at the Corowa Aquatic Centre have been working diligently to deliver a fun and affordable Learn to Swim Program that will teach local children the life-long skill of swimming, so they can be comfortable, strong and happy in the water,” he said.
“Teaching your child or yourself to swim is one of the most important decisions you will make in life and our Corowa Aquatic Centre team is committed to promoting fun and enjoyment of all things water for swimmers of all abilities.”
Swimming Assessments have begun to support class allocation which ranges from the ‘Shrimp’ class, for children aged 6-12 months to the ‘Murray Cod’ class which has a strong focus on advanced stroke correction.Corowa Aquatic Centre’s Duty Officer of Public Pools, Jo Laws said it was fantastic to see the excitement from children who had attended the centre for their swimming assessments.
“We cannot wait to start the program, and have been totally blown away by the response,” she said.
“We already have some classes that are fully booked, with a waiting list and we are exploring other opportunities to increase the number of classes on offer. Our team looks forward to commencing lessons and partnering with local families to grow their children’s skills and confidence in the water.”
