Seymour’s A-grade netballers defeated Benalla Saints in their clash on Good Friday, sinking 47 goals to 29 to take the win.
The Lions set up its game nicely, putting in a dominant first quarter to double the Saints’ score early.
But Benalla didn’t back down, increasing its midcourt pressure and output of defensive acts to shut down the feed of the Lions shooters.
But a number of changes to the Lions midcourt saw an increase in speed and acceleration, with the Lions taking their momentum into the second half to dominate the remainder of the game.
Lions’ shooters Elise O’Sullivan (24 goals) and Jessica Lallo (23 goals) bested their Benalla counterparts in attack, while Meg Grbac and Lucy Zotti also impressed with their efforts.
B-grade
The Seymour Lions edged their opponents in the Saints by 11 goals on Good Friday to record the win.
Both sides had strong starts to the game, but it was Seymour who forced more errors to take the lead, before getting the jump defensively in the second term to extend the margin again.
The Saints outscored the Lions by one in the final term, but it wasn’t enough to counter the Lions’ opening three terms.
Mariah Baumann put the Lions in a strong position with her 30 goals, while Sophie Locke, Lyndel O’Sullivan and Courtney Aldous were also named among the best.
B-reserve
A four quarter effort from the Lions saw them fend off the Saints by 15 goals on the weekend.
The Lions outscored their rivals at every turn, including an especially dominant second and third quarters, while strong defensive work by the visitors meant they capitalised on a number of rebounds and great delivery from down the court.
The forward combination of Bianca Schalhg (23 goals) and Annika Sutherland (31) was electric, while Grace O’Sullivan’s efforts in attack were vital in the win.
Under-17
Seymour celebrated a 60 to 26 walkover against Benalla in their Round 3 clash.
The Saints rallied to outscore the Lions 17 to 4 in the final term, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Lions’ dominant opening three quarters.
The Lions got off to a flyer converting off of the many defensive turnovers by Bridie Cantwell, with Ruby Martini (35 goals) and Abbey Cook (15) combining in attack. Seymour’s Madison Albers was named best on court in the win.
Under-15
The young Lions outfit had a solid win over the Saints, beating the home side 55 to 25 in their Good Friday clash.
Seymour got off to a good start, getting quick entry into their shooters, while its midcourt pressure helped create a number of turnovers. A first half lead of 25 to nine meant the Saints barely challenged the Lions.
Grace Barry was the star of the midcourt, settling her side’s attack, while Ashlyn Webster and Mia Allen dominated the ring with 35 and 20 goals respectively. Defensively, Sophie Conroy and Jorydn Beattle battled well.
