Mayor Bill Chisholm said registering your dog and cat was crucial in reuniting owners and pets if the pet became lost.
‘‘Pets are an important part of people’s lives so protecting them is a key focus for us,’’ he said.
‘‘Without programs like pet registration, some pets may not make their way home — the last thing we want for these family members.
‘‘Help us help your pets stay safe by keeping up-to-date on your personal information and pet registration.
‘‘If your pet is lost but is registered, and a Local Laws Officer collects your dog or cat, we will do our very best get them home to you.’’
Being a responsible pet owner means you have committed to this dog or cat for the rest of its life; you must feed, water, exercise, de-sex and have regular health checks at your vet — and remember to register your pet.
Dog and cat owners could be fined up to $500 if they do not abide by the registration laws and even more if their animal is not registered and gets out.
All Victorian dog and cat owners must register their pets from three months old.
