Its tireless and completely voluntary work has helped sufferers and families through difficult times in their lives.
On April 18, 1984, a public meeting formed the Seymour Cancer Crusade Unit which went on to become what it is known today as the Seymour branch of the Cancer Council.
The first leader was Marian Pearce and the deputy leader was Marnie Sloane and both women still continue to volunteer with the Cancer Council today.
The aim of the unit has always been to raise money for the anti-cancer cause and to distribute anti-cancer educational materials throughout the community.
Educational materials have included travelling to schools and reminding students of the ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ message, showing women how to check for breast cancer and running information sessions on various cancers and how to detect and avoid them.
The Seymour volunteer group’s fundraising efforts have never ceased with events such as the Biggest Morning Tea, Relay For Life and special nights including chef Gabriel Gaté launching the Anti Cancer Cookbook in Seymour helping raise funds over the years.
The group has raised an enormous amount of money with all proceeds going directly to the Cancer Council and being invested in research and awareness campaigns.
Throughout its 35-year history, the Cancer Council Seymour branch has been a pillar in the community.
Its work has seen the good and the bad, the happy and the sad and yet they still continue to give up their time to help those who need it most.
The fantastic work of the Seymour branch of Cancer Council will be celebrated at an upcoming event.
Members of the Seymour Volunteer Group of the Cancer Council Victoria will gather to celebrate 35 years of fundraising at a dinner on May 3 at the Seymour Club.
Past members and friends are also welcome to attend the night.
