Boost for solar

By Seymour Telegraph

Victorian residents can get a rebate if they’ve installed solar hot water system on their roofs.

The Andrews Government is giving home owners the rebate under its Solar Home package.

Home owners can claim up to $1000 rebate for systems installed on or after August 19, 2018.

This means that anyone who’s gone solar in the past seven months can claim the rebate.

Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said installing solar hot water can save homeowners between $160 and $400 a year.

‘‘We’re putting solar panels and hot water systems on Victorian homes to help families save hundreds of dollars a year on their electricity bills’’ she said.

The rebate is just one part of the Andrews Government Solar Homes package.

The package is endeavouring to supply 60000 solar hot-water systems, 700000 solar electricity panels and 10000 solar batteries to homes in Victoria.

It’s estimated the program will cut Victoria’s carbon emissions by almost four million tonnes — the same as taking one million of Victoria’s 4.6million cars off the road — and generate 12.5 per cent of Victoria’s 40 per cent target for renewable energy by 2025.

‘‘We’re not wasting a second rolling out our landmark Solar Homes package — driving down household bills and delivering on our renewable energy target,’’ Ms D’Ambrosio said.

If home owners are considering a solar hot-water system they need to keep in mind that all solar hot-water installations must be completed by a licensed plumber, while electrical work must be done by a Class A electrician licensed by Energy Safe Victoria, or a recognised equivalent from another Australian jurisdiction.

Systems installed under the package must be on the Clean Energy Regulator’s Register of Solar Hot-water Heaters and the Victorian Essential Services Commission Registered Products list.

A Certificate of Electrical Safety, certified by a licensed inspector registered with Energy Safe must also be provided. The plumber must provide a certificate of compliance to the householder.
