Wilby Tennis

By Yarrawonga Chronicle

The second round of finals took place last Friday night with Telford hosting Burramine and Mulwala hosting Wilby.

Telford vs Burramine

These teams played on the grass with both aiming to get to a Grand Final.

Burramine had a few key outs and a very young squad but they started well in the men’s. They won 4 out of the 6 sets with Jason Bassett winning his 3 sets to continue his good form of late.

The margin overall was very close with Burramine getting a 1 game advantage.

The Telford ladies did as they have done most of the year and put in another solid performance.

They won all 6 sets and built a handy 26 game lead.

With the result beyond doubt going into the mixed they played fast 4 tennis with both sides taking 2 sets each, however it was Telford who won their way into another Grand Final 79 games to 52.

Well done to all of the Burramine youngsters who played very well on the night.

Mulwala vs Wilby

Mulwala hosted Wilby and this was a cracker of a contest played in great spirit, both sides had a lot of fun on the night.

Wilby had the upper hand in the men’s winning 4 out of the 6 sets, with Russell Whinray winding back the clock and winning his 3 sets and they held a slender 4 game lead.

The Mulwala women gained the ascendancy for the night winning 4 sets of their own with Naomi winning her 3 sets.

Mulwala won by 11 games and they were suddenly up by 7 heading into the mixed.

It was a topsy turvy contest in the mixed with Wilby winning 2 sets 6-1 giving them a shot at getting over the line.

Mulwala held steady in the other 2 sets taking them 6-4 and 6-2 to hold on by 3 games 71 games to 68.

Mulwala are now through to the B Grade Grand Final, while Wilby needs to regroup and come back stronger next year.

The grand finalists are now decided with Tungamah to play Telford for the 3rd year in a row in the A Division.

This will be on the hard courts at Yarrawonga on Friday night at 6pm sharp.

YLTC is taking on Mulwala in the B Division also at Yarrawonga on the grass next Friday night start time to be confirmed.
