Biggest and best line-up ever

By Robert Muir

Two big, two-day golf events in Yarrawonga and Mulwala, from January 29 to February 1 this year will attract many big name professionals, including Peter (Chook) Fowler and Peter Lonard for their first event in town.

“It’s the biggest and best line-up of professionals ever to come to town,” excited Tournament Director at Black Bull Golf Course, James McCully told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.

“We’ll have a full field around the 75 mark of professionals and about the same number of amateurs and sponsors.”

On Tuesday, January 29 and Wednesday, January 30 Black Bull Golf Club will host the PGA and Victorian Senior Golfers Championship. The professionals will play stroke, while the Pro Am will be a 4BBB.

The same format will apply on Thursday, January 31 and Friday, February 1 at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort on the Murray Course Thursday and the Lake Course Friday in the Senior Victorian Open Championship.

Black Bull and Yarrawonga Mulwala clubs have hosted a three-day PGA conducted Senior Victorian Open event for the past three years, over three days. This year, there are two BMW Shepparton-sponsored championships, with a prestigious title up for grabs at both superb courses.

“Peter Fowler is definitely coming. It will be his first time here,” Mr McCully said of the 59-year-old from NSW. “He’s a big name. And we’ve just heard that Peter Lonard (51-year-old from NSW) is coming. He’s another big name.

“Then there’s Peter Senior, as well as Peter O’Malley, Rodger Davis, Mike Harwood and Terry Price, and current Order of Merit Legends leader Brad Burn as other really big names. There are plenty more who will challenge.

“There will also be celebrity power with Billy Brownless and Michael Tuck. I encourage all golfers to walk the fairways with these past and present champions.”

As on previous occasions, the action at Black Bull will commence on the eve of the championship, on Monday, January 28 with the Shoot-Out. Players hit to the 100m away wine barrel in a knock-out, winner takes all $1,000 as the nearest to the barrel.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort’s head professional Evan Droop described as “a fantastic field” the star-studded line-up of professionals in the 2019 championships.

“It doesn’t clash with the Victorian Open so we have the ability to get some other players,” the excited pro shop manager/tournament director said. “With Peter Fowler and Peter Lonard coming, it certainly makes it a lot stronger field.”

In keeping with tradition, the Sportsman’s Night on Thursday January 31 at the club resort will undoubtedly be another huge hit, with three top professionals on stage being asked to comment on many questions from a fellow professional.

“That is always a great night, with plenty of loaded questions and plenty of laughs from tales over the years,” tournament director Evan said.

Tickets for the evening, which includes meal and wonderful formal part, can be purchased for $55 per person at the club resort reception.
