After almost 20 years with AFL Victoria, local football legend and football development manager, Greg Liddell retired on Friday, March 11.
Mr Liddell joined AFL Victoria in 2000 when he was appointed as a football development manager in the Sunraysia/Mallee region with what was then Football Victoria.
After four years in that role he moved back to the Goulburn Murray region to continue his work as a football development manager.
Mr Liddell has made a significant contribution to AFL Victoria across several areas, both within his role as a football development manager and supporting several AFL programs.
In 2009, Mr Liddell initiated the first Youth Girls team in the Goulburn Murray region at Mooroopna, and later at Notre Dame. They played in the Bendigo region which led to the formation of the current youth girl’s competition in the Shepparton and Districts Junior Football League.
Mr Liddell also established the second under-15 Goulburn Murray team in the V/Line Championships in 2009.
Throughout his time with AFL Victoria, he established strong relationships with a number of stakeholders across community football and was witness to and part of many positive changes in community football.
He influenced significant change in the Goulburn Murray region which included involvement in reviews of junior leagues including Seymour and Districts Junior Football League, Shepparton and Districts Junior Football League and Kyabram and Districts Junior Football League.
More recently, Mr Liddell has been involved in coaching strategy and a review of junior football across the Goulburn Murray region.
He has been a key driver of the AFL Goulburn Murray Australian Football Coaches Association branch for many years and made an invaluable contribution to coaching across the region through his passion and commitment to the association.
Outside his work with AFL Victoria, Mr Liddell was inducted in the Goulburn Valley League Hall of Fame in 2018 which was a significant achievement and recognition of Mr Liddell’s contribution to the game.
Mr Liddell has been a passionate supporter of AFL Victoria’s programs and community football and will leave a strong legacy behind.
He is being replaced by Daniel Preston, who has a strong background in community football across the Goulburn Murray and North East Border regions where he has coached at Auskick level through to a senior assistant coaching role with Benalla All Blacks.
