The midweek pennant grand final was played at the Broadford green between old rivals Seymour VRI and Kilmore and the result did not disappoint anyone with all players trying their best for their respective teams.
One rink from Seymour VRI took the lead and headed off for a good break and won easily by 14 shots and that was the difference between the teams as the other two teams slugged it out with one Seymour VRI rink winning by four shots and one Kilmore team winning by four shots.
Seymour VRI 76 defeated Kilmore 62.
Joe Purcell’s rink cruised its way to the 5th end, then won six consecutive ends to establish a lead for the remainder of the game with 14 shots up at the 19th end while the Seymour VRI team scored seven shots over four ends and the opposition also scored seven shots over two ends. Purcell’s rink won by 14 shots.
In a close encounter, Bill Dawe’s rink held its opponents to take the lead from the 6th end and held it throughout the game. The opposition kept on coming back, with scores being level at the 9th and the 21st end, but scoring six shots on the 24th end Dawe’s rink won the game with a four-shot win.
Playing against a superior team, Daniel Noonan’s rink held it to account with scores being level at the 14th end, taking the lead for one end and after that chasing score for the remainder of the game and going down by four shots even after scoring four shots over the last two ends.
Saturday pennant saw the division seven Goulburn Valley team travelled to Dookie to play in the preliminary final against Nagambie which finished on top of the ladder to get an improbable result defeating Nagambie by seven shots. One rink fought back hard after afternoon tea to nearly cause an upset, but down by five shots was an excellent result, the other rink took charge and by the end of the game had the numbers on the scoreboard, winning by 12 shots.
Seymour VRI 51 defeated Nagambie 44.
Wayne Flint’s rink played a competitive and close game up to the 14th end being one shot down, then winning the next six consecutive ends was 12 shots up at the 20th end and with both teams scoring four shots over the last five ends, the winning margin remained at 12 shots up at the finish of the game.
Donald Prudden replaced the team skip withdrawn at late notice and after a slow start and failing to score for seven consecutive ends was 13 shots down at the 15th end, with a resurgence in the team started scoring and was actually one shot up at the 22nd end but did not score on the last three ends and being the last rink to finish held on to avoid an overall loss, going down by five shots.
On Saturday, the Goulburn Valley division seven team will play the grand final against Seymour which finished second. The venue is yet to be announced.
