Cagliari defeat Fiorentina in Serie A

By AAP Newswire

Cagliari have moved clear of the lower reaches of the Italian Serie A thanks to a 2-1 home win against Fiorentina.

Cagliari re-emerged briskly after the break following a mostly uneventful first half and Brazilian midfielder Joao Pedro opened the scoring, finishing off a brilliant cross from Fabrizio Cacciatore in the 52nd minute.

Luca Ceppitelli headed the winner on 66 minutes off Charalampos Lykogiannis' free kick.

Joao Pedro should have sealed the result but his shot from a rebound struck the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

Forward Federico Chiesa curled the consolation inside the far post for the guests with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Cagliari midfielder Luca Cigarini scored what would have been a contender for goal of the season from his own half but it was ruled out by referee Daniele Doveri as it should have been an indirect free kick.

Three seasons after their most recent stint in Serie B, the Sardinia side are now nine points clear of the three-team drop zone.

Fiorentina, who haven't won in four league matches, are in 10th place, seven points above Cagliari, after the game opened matchday 28.

The Violet had hoped to keep alive their shot at securing a final Europa League slot with a victory.

Third-placed AC Milan have one more point than Inter Milan ahead of Sunday's city derby.
