The Telegraph understands at least one challenge to the hardware retailer’s local plans has been lodged with VCAT.
Bunnings plans to build a franchise on the north-east corner of Anzac Ave and Victoria St, with frontages to both streets after a planning permit application received by Mitchell Shire Council last year was granted at a recent meeting.
The permit application addressed the use and development of the land, alteration of access to a road zone, reduction of bicycle parking requirements and display of signage.
The traffic impact assessment submitted with the application indicated between 13 and 18 deliveries would be made to the proposed store each weekday (including waste collection vehicles) between 7am and 4pm.
A total of 17 objections were received in response to the application related to the appropriateness of the proposed land use, residential interfaces and amenity, urban design and access and heritage considerations.
There were also concerns about the development’s impact on existing businesses, the site’s proximity to the Anzac Ave war memorial and potential danger to schoolchildren caused by increased traffic.
However, most councillors believed the proposal would result in a net community benefit as it encouraged economic and employment gain.
