Parks Victoria invites the community to visit Days Mill Historic Area from 10am - 4pm this Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23.
Currently not open to the public due to restoration works, this weekend is the perfect chance to explore the remarkable 19th century flour mill and see its progress.
Visitors are invited to stroll the grounds of the area and wander through the historic buildings.
Guided tours will run at 11am, noon and 2.15pm on both Friday and Saturday, for visitors to hear first-hand about the mill, house and gatehouse at the heritage registered site.
Days Mill is just one of more than 50 places of heritage and history being opened up to the public as part of Greater Shepparton’s Heritage Open Days.
Days Mill is one of the finest examples of traditional milling technology in working order in its original setting in Victoria, and probably Australia. The three-storey brick mill from 1865 and later granary extension, the flanking two-storey brick residence, the evocative collection of farm buildings, and the peppercorn and pine tree-lined drive from the gatehouse comprise an unforgettable heritage site.
Parks Victoria range team leader for Shepparton, Neville Wells is thrilled to have the historic area open to the public.
‘‘Days Mill has very high profile locally and across the district the community is interested to see and hear about the recent restorations,’’ he said.
‘‘Parks Victoria plays a stewardship role of managing Days Mill on behalf of the community and we’re looking forward to opening it up to visitors.
‘‘The open days are a perfect opportunity for people to see the restoration work we’re undertaking. In particular, the Gatehouse has been transformed.
‘‘Those who have visited before might not recognise it and are sure to be impressed.’’
No bookings are required for Days Mill but visitors are urged to wear suitable clothing, footwear and sun protection and bring a water bottle.
