For the first time, adoption fees have been waived for Greyhound Adoption Program’s (GAP) three-day greyhound adoption bonanza.
From January 18 - 20 head down to the GAP headquarters from 10am - 3pm when more than 100 greyhounds will be available for adoption.
‘‘Basically we have a whole lot of greyhounds needing homes,’’ adoption manager Larissa Darragh said.
‘‘Our kennels are full.
‘‘We held a similar program in 2018 which was very successful. We actually ran out of dogs by the end of the second day.’’
If you are thinking about adopting and want to find out more information, this is a great opportunity because staff from GAP will be on hand to answer any questions while visitors can meet and interact with the placid, friendly greyhounds.
The program will still be following their regular process which matches greyhounds with the right owners. But this weekend, when a suitable adopter is found, they will be able to take home their new greyhound free of charge.
‘‘Greyhounds are quiet and easy-going pets,’’ Larissa said.
‘‘They make a fantastic low-energy, household pet.’’
GAP helps greyhounds and retired racing greyhounds find new homes to join. Through the program, the greyhounds complete pet-skills training, such as walking on a lead and being in a home, and a temperament assessment to ensure they are safe around smaller dogs. If a greyhound requires more time to adjust to life after racing, they are paired with a foster carer who meets their specific needs and can help them settle into a home. Once the greyhound has passed the program, they are given a green GAP collar and are ready for adoption.
GAP is committed to ensuring all connections made are well suited for both the greyhound and the new owner. While GAP strives to achieve a perfect match from the outset, all adoptions are subject to a three-week trial period and greyhounds are always welcome back if a suitable home cannot be provided for them.
Registrations for the event are essential at gap.grv.org.au/events/greyhound-adoption-day
It is free to attend an adoption day and you will be sent more information, including a list of greyhounds available for adoption, closer to the date.
If you are unable to attend the event in January, you can still visit GAP at 298 Goulburn Valley Hwy from Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 4pm, and Saturday by appointment to meet and adopt greyhounds.
Unfortunately, due to high demand, there will be no cat-tolerant greyhounds on the day.
