McCarthy joined Seymour in 1978 after a distinguished playing career in Melbourne and Bendigo.
McCarthy played 148 games for North Melbourne between 1962 and 1971, kicking 80 goals in the number one guernsey.
He was made a club life member, and played in two night premierships for the Kangaroos.
He would then head to Preston in the VFA, followed by a move to South-Bendigo in the Bendigo Football League, where he claimed the 1973 Michelsen Medal, and led his side to the 1974 flag.
McCarthy had a huge impact on Seymour immediately upon his arrival in the GVL, taking the Lions to the 1978 and 1979 GVL grand finals, as well as a third placed finish in 1980.
In his final year, 1980, he won the senior best and fairest.
Seymour continued its rise as a side after McCarthy’s departure, winning the 1981 and 1982 GVL flags.
For his incredible impact on the club, McCarthy was named back pocket in the Lion’s Team of the Century in 2000.
In a post on the Seymour Football Netball Club’s Facebook page, club secretary said McCarthy’s would be remembered as “a gentleman who loved to win with a conscientious personality.”Gary Brown
