Avenel wasn’t able to put the icing on the cake for Cael McCarthy’s 100th senior game for the club.

The Swans were defeated by Stanhope 4.7 (31) to 8.20 (68) away from home on Saturday. The withdrawal of Chayse Thomson before the game with ankle complaints meant the Swans went into the game with only 20 players.

That followed on from a number of injuries from last week’s battle with Nagambie.

The undermanned team put up a tough fight in the defensive end, with Stanhope unable to capitalise on goals to register a whopping 20 behinds.

McCarthy played well for the Swans in his milestone game, providing a strong forward target despite not being able to put one on the board.

Some of the better performers for Avenel included Andrew Green, Angus Durnan and Mick Morgan.

Assistant coach Kasey Duncan said it was a tough match for the side.

‘‘Stanhope played really well and are a well-drilled, all-round side,’’ he said.

The Swans are now looking to bounce back with a win against the struggling Ardmona at home this weekend.
