Kilmore’s heritage streetlights are about to get a modern touch with new LED light fittings to be installed.

Kilmore’s heritage streetlights are about to get a modern touch with new LED light fittings to be installed.

Works will start on Friday, May 11 and are expected to take two weeks to complete. The 14 lights will be colour-matched to the existing poles and will provide increased lighting levels in Sydney St.

The $25000 project is funded through a council-reserve for non-standard lighting maintenance.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said she looked forward to seeing how the new lights would look.

‘‘Unfortunately, the old light fittings were no longer safe and we’ve had to make the decision to replace them,’’ Cr Sanderson said.

‘‘A number of other towns have also had to do this. This will give the lights a fresh look for years to come that still complements the heritage elements of the streetscape.

‘‘The new lights will also shine a brighter light for improved pedestrian and vehicle safety, they’ll be cheaper to run and they’re better for the environment.’’

Cr Sanderson said there would be some minor disruptions in Sydney St while works were under way.

‘‘The plan is to install the first two lights on Friday, May 11 and the remaining on Monday, May 21,’’ Cr Sanderson said.

‘‘Contractors will be working on small sections at a time utilising existing car park spaces to minimise disruptions to businesses and all works will be completed between the hours of 9am to 3pm to avoid peak traffic times.’’
