Observers say it took rescuers roughly 10 hours to get the truck out of the channel.

A Leocata’s Transport B-double careered off the northbound lane of the Goulburn Valley Fwy near Grange Rd and plunged into an irrigation channel on Monday afternoon.

The cab and tautliner trailers full of bottles were nearly totally submerged but the driver was rescued when underwater and was taken to hospital.

Nagambie resident Diane Grant said her husband John, a truck driver, was called out to see what happened.

‘‘It took an excavator to dig part of the channel bank down to allow three heavy vehicle tow trucks to tow the Western Star prime mover and two trailers out plus the water emergency vehicles with a canoe,’’ she said.

‘‘It took roughly 10 hours to get it out of the channel in the rescue operation.’’
