Father Gary celebrated

November 30, 2017

For two years the Anglican Parish of Central Goulburn — consisting of parish folk from St Paul’s Avenel, St John’s Nagambie and Christ Church Seymour — has been fortunate to have Father Gary Atherton in charge.

In September 2015 Fr Gary Atherton, wife Karen, and adult twin sons Matthew and Christopher came to Victoria from Bramble Bay in Queensland.

Members from the three parish centres gathered on Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King, to celebrate 30 years of Fr Gary’s ministry since he was ordained an Anglican priest.

The anniversary service was full of hymns of praise, Bible readings, Psalms, prayers and thanksgiving.

Looking on during the occasion were Fr Gary’s wife Karen, their twin sons Matthew and Christopher, and from Grafton son David, his wife Jenna and their baby daughter Aria, Fr Gary’s parents-in-law Grace and Robert Foster from Casino, his sister-in-law Debbie Foster from Tweed Heads, and his sister Leanne arrived in time for the celebration lunch.

Father Gary and Karen were both thanked for their continual service to God and the communities in which they have lived and served.

Fr Gary spoke in response to the hearty congratulations expressed by all in the church; he thanked his wife, his family and all who have supported him in his ministry, and shared how he hoped to continue the good work done through the years in the church and general community depending on what God called him to do.

A celebration lunch was held in the hall and a 30th anniversary cake took pride of place for Fr Gary to cut, with his family and parish folk looking on and wishing him well for the future.
