From November 27 to December 1 the Australian Red Cross Blood Service mobile donor centre will be visiting the heart of Seymour for the first time, with the organisation calling for more locals to donate.
Australian Red Cross Blood Service community relations officer Colin Littlejohn said the centre needed the support of the local community to ensure patients’ needs could be met.
‘‘Currently only a handful of locals have made appointments to give blood next week — well below what is required,’’ Mr Littlejohn said.
‘‘Previously the mobile donor centre visited the Puckapunyal army base and we understand there have been difficulties in the past for non-army personnel to attend the mobile donor centre.
‘‘In order to make it easier for more people to donate we’ll now be coming directly to Seymour.
‘‘We need almost 160 locals to make appointments to give blood next week — and with every blood donation saving up to three lives, that’s enough blood to save up to 480 lives.’’
The mobile blood donor centre will be located in the Woolworths car park on William St in the heart of Seymour, and Mr Littlejohn is urging locals to take the time to give blood.
‘‘Don’t wait, donate,’’ Mr Littlejohn said.
‘‘What many people don’t realise is the majority of donated blood, around 35 per cent, goes to help cancer patients and people with blood diseases,’’ he said.
Australia needs 25000 donations every week to meet demand, with donations going to help people suffering from a range of illnesses and conditions including cancer and blood diseases, anaemia, and surgical patients in addition to trauma patients.
Donating blood only takes an hour and is one of the easiest ways to give back to the community.
The mobile donor centre will be located at the Woolworths car park in Wallis St, Seymour and will be open on Monday, November 27 from 5pm to 7.30pm; Tuesday, November 28 from 12.30pm to 7.30pm; Wednesday, November 29 from 12.30pm to 7.30pm; Thursday, November 30 from 9am to 4.30pm; and Friday, December 1 from 7.45am to noon.
