More than 95 per cent of five-year-olds in Mitchell Shire have been fully immunised against preventable and serious life-threatening diseases, which is higher than the state and national averages.

More than 95 per cent of five-year-olds in Mitchell Shire have been fully immunised against preventable and serious life-threatening diseases, which is higher than the state and national averages.

The figures indicate Mitchell Shire has reached the ‘herd immunity’ target, which is necessary to halt the spread of diseases such as measles.

According to the latest figures from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register, 95.7 per cent of Mitchell Shire children aged five years had been fully immunised as of June 30 this year, compared with 94.9 per cent across Victoria and 94 per cent Australia-wide.

The data also revealed 97.2 per cent of one-year-olds and 90.7 per cent of two-year-olds in Mitchell Shire were fully immunised.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the immunisation rates were encouraging, but there was still room for improvement.

‘‘Vaccinating your children is an important way to protect them from diseases such as measles, whooping cough and meningococcal meningitis, and it’s also an important way to protect children in the community with low immune systems,’’ Cr Sanderson said.

‘‘Immunisation services are provided across the shire and are free of charge to all children eligible for Medicare.

‘‘While it’s encouraging that a large percentage of children in Mitchell have been immunised, there’s still room for improvement.

‘‘We would like to see these figures as close to 100 per cent as possible.’’

In January this year, the Victorian Government introduced the No Jab, No Play law, which requires children to have a record of immunisation before they are enrolled in kindergarten or childcare, unless they have a medical reason.

Parents and guardians can keep up-to-date with when their child’s immunisations are due by downloading the Victorian Government’s VaxOnTime app.

Immunisation sessions are held each month in Broadford, Kilmore, Puckapunyal, Seymour and Wallan.
