The Seymour Little Athletics Centre has a gold medallist who will soon go to Adelaide to represent Victoria in the Pan Pacific Games.
Trawool’s Orla McCarthy, won the 12/13 year girls 750g discus throw at the School Sports Victoria Primary Track and Field State Championships held in Albert Park on October 30.
Despite becoming the eventual winner, Orla got off to a shaky start with fouls on her practise throw and first two recorded throws.
However, she modified her third and final throw to a ‘South African’ half-turn, in order to throw conservatively and secure her a place in the top eight, awarding her a fourth and final throw.
This settled her nerves, and while her final throw of 31.91m was a long way off her personal best — almost 38m — it was enough to take first place on a blustery day.
Orla said she was over the moon to win, especially since she had thrown two fouls before launching the winning throw.
‘‘For the final round I was coming fifth, and I had to wait for others to throw after me, so even though I had a big throw, anything could still happen at that point,’’ she said.
‘‘But when I found that I’d won I ran over to Mum and Dad screaming, I was very excited.’’
The Pan Pacific Games will see students aged between 10 and 19 years from at least 15 countries, including every Australian state and territory, compete from December 3-9 in Adelaide.
