It was heartbreak for Avenel on Saturday, going down by 22 points to Tallygaroopna in the preliminary final.
The Swans kicked themselves out of contention, kicking 3.14 for the game, while there was no such problem for Tallygaroopna which kicked a far more accurate 8.6 to run out winners.
Upsetting the Redlegs at home was never going to be an easy task but the Swans looked up to the challenge early.
Three first-quarter goals gave Avenel a handy four-point lead at quarter-time before Tallygaroopna took the reins after the break.
The Redlegs controlled the football, holding Avenel to just a single point in the second quarter to get out to a nine-point half-time lead.
But the Swans weren’t done yet. Avenel refused to hang its head and continued to press deep, coming back to take the lead in the third quarter and set up a photo-finish in the tight, low-scoring contest.
Trailing by a point at three-quarter time, Tallygaroopna was under pressure to finish the game strongly, and it was the Redlegs that were the hungrier of the two sides, with their four-goal final quarter giving them the lead and that elusive place in the grand final.
