In marking Harmony Day on Thursday, Edward River Council and Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre issued a joint statement to acknowledge the cultural diversity that enriches our Edward River community.
Harmony Day is observed annually on March 21, and serves as a poignant reminder that everyone belongs.
In 2024, ERC wanted to particularly highlight the invaluable contributions of our local Aboriginal community to the tapestry of our society.
“As custodians of this land for thousands of years, the Aboriginal people have endowed us with a profound cultural heritage, invaluable ancestral knowledge, and a deep respect for the land upon which we live and work,” council said.
“By recognising and celebrating the cultural diversity of our community, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an environment where everyone feels safe, valued, respected, and included.”
Edward River Council acting general manager Mark Dalzell said Harmony Day is a time for us to reflect on the meaning of the principles of equality, unity and reconciliation.
“As a government organisation, we are committed to upholding the values of respect and equality and denounce all forms of disrespect, racism and discrimination. It has no place in our society,” he said.
“It is imperative that we work together as a community to challenge and dismantle this behaviour in all its manifestations, to foster a society where everyone is treated with fairness, dignity and compassion.”
Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre Chair and local Wamba Wamba elder Jeanette Crew OAM, said Harmony Day represents an opportunity to “reset relationships following last year's referendum.”
“This period triggered behaviours that created division and hurt, and unfortunately largely based on misunderstandings,” she said.
“Yarkuwa continues to hope for honest conversations, even on hard issues, to build strong relationships across all sectors of the community.
“We welcome everyone who wants to work together to look after our lands and waters to ensure that we can create a hopeful future for our coming generations.”
