If Mitchell Shire’s natural environment matters to you, now is the time let council know what you value most and what needs improving.

If Mitchell Shire’s natural environment matters to you, now is the time let council know what you value most and what needs improving.

Council’s Environment Survey is now open, gathering information about how important environmental initiatives are, what works and activities are being undertaken on properties across Mitchell, and what might encourage people to do more.

The information will be used to help develop new programs and evaluate and improve council’s existing programs.

Questions asked in the survey include:

●What do you value most about Mitchell Shire’s natural environment?

●What do you think are the most important environmental issues in Mitchell Shire?

●What environmental or land management activities do you undertake on your property?

●What are the barriers stopping you from undertaking environmental works on your property?

●Do you think it is important for council to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions?

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said the recent Council Plan consultation confirmed the natural environment was important to many residents and landholders, and the survey would help guide council’s future environment and sustainability programs.

‘‘Many Mitchell Shire residents have already taken action such as weed control, tree planting or solar panels,’’ Cr Sanderson said.

‘‘Some people would like to do more for the environment, but they might not know where to start.

‘‘By gathering this information, council will be better informed of the environmental and sustainability activities being undertaken by our community and any challenges they face.

‘‘Council can then use that data to help implement environment programs or improve our current programs.’’

Cr Sanderson said some of the questions were also asked in 2013 as part of the development of the Mitchell Shire Environment Strategy, and in 2011 as part of the Mitchell Shire Sustainable Resource Management Strategy, and would assist in measuring change over time.

The Environment Survey is open until August 31, and participants can go into the draw to win one of two $100 vouchers to use at a local native nursery or agricultural supplies store.

The survey can be taken at www.engagingmitchell shire.com or hard copies can be picked up at any of Council’s Customer and Library Service Centres.
